UHMWPE Round Sling

Lift Sling Rigging Co., Ltd manufactures high strength UHMWPE round slings: an endless    round sling built from a continuous UHMWPE / HMPE yarn core inside a soft woven protective sleeve.    For the same sling size it gives about two to three times the strength of high-strength    polyester, at roughly one third of the weight, and it resists cutting and    abrasion far better. The soft endless body has no metal fittings, so it will not scratch or mark the    load, and it coils down small enough to carry in one hand.

Why choose a UHMWPE round sling?

  • Two to three times the strength of high-strength polyester. The same working load      limit in a much smaller, softer sling — or a far higher working load limit in the size you      already use.

  • About one third of the weight. A UHMWPE round sling that lifts what a heavy      high-strength polyester sling lifts can often be carried and positioned by one person, which saves      real time at height, offshore and anywhere the sling has to be walked to the lift point.

  • Better cut and abrasion resistance. The UHMWPE core and sleeve stand up to steel,      plate, castings, scrap and rough concrete far better than high-strength polyester or nylon.

  • Soft, high strength rope construction. A flexible endless loop with no metal      fittings and no hard spots: it wraps tight around awkward shapes and it will not scratch, dent or      mark machined, painted or polished surfaces.

  • Very low stretch. UHMWPE has a very low elongation at working load, so the sling      stores little energy and the lift stays tight and predictable.

  • Very low water absorption — it floats. The sling does not take on water, does      not stiffen and does not rot, and a dropped sling can be recovered from the water.

  • Excellent chemical and UV resistance. It holds up in salt water, oils and most      acids and alkalis, indoors and outdoors.

  • Colour coded and traceable. Colour coded by working load limit for quick      identification on site, with a sewn on label and a proof load report.

Construction and design

  • Endless round sling: a continuous UHMWPE / HMPE yarn core wound into a loop, with no sewn ends, no joints and no metal fittings.

  • Soft woven protective sleeve over the core, so the load bearing yarn never touches the load or the hook directly.

  • Double braided rope body available where a firmer, more abrasion resistant cover is wanted.

  • Reinforced wear points and optional extra outer sleeve for sharp or abrasive edges.

  • Colour coded by working load limit, with a sewn on capacity label.

  • Safety factor 7:1 to EN 1492-2 — every sling is proof loaded before it leaves the factory.

Markings and traceability

Every sling carries a sewn on label with the information needed for safe use, for    inspection and for audit:

  • Working load limit in tonnes, with the matching sleeve colour code.

  • Effective length in metres.

  • Material — UHMWPE / HMPE.

  • Safety factor — 7:1.

  • Standard complied with — EN 1492-2.

  • Manufacturer name, date of manufacture and a unique traceability number.

  • QR code or barcode traceability on request, linked to the test certificate.

Applications for heavy lifting

  • Offshore and marine — a sling that floats, does not absorb water and does not corrode, for deck lifts, subsea work and salvage.

  • Shipyards and dry docks — heavy sections, blocks and machinery in a wet, abrasive environment.

  • Wind energy — tower sections, nacelles and blades, including work at height where sling weight and handling time matter.

  • Steel fabrication and plate handling — sharp edges and abrasive surfaces where cut resistance is decisive.

  • Precast concrete and tunnel segments — strong, non marring and easy to place in tight shutters.

  • Heavy machinery, dies and moulds — precise, low stretch lifts of finished parts that must not be marked.

  • Dredging and civil engineering — wet and abrasive conditions where polyester ages quickly.

  • Aviation, defence and rescue — the highest strength to weight ratio in a soft, stowable sling.

Customisation options

  • Working load limit and effective length made to your drawing, from 1 t to 100 t and above.

  • Sleeve colour, sleeve material and extra outer covers for abrasive or sharp loads.

  • Double braided rope construction for a firmer, more durable cover.

  • Your own colour, printed logo, label layout and customer part numbers.

  • Test certificate to EN 1492-2 and a proof load report with every shipment.

Quality control and testing

UHMWPE yarn is wound, sleeved, sewn and finished in our own workshop in Taizhou, Jiangsu. Every    production batch is checked for core construction, sleeve weave and stitch pattern, and every finished    sling is proof loaded before packing. Minimum breaking load is verified on the test bed and recorded    against the sling’s traceability number, so the certificate that ships with the sling can always be    traced back to the batch and the test record.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UHMWPE round sling?

It is an endless round lifting sling. A continuous core of UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight    polyethylene, also called HMPE) yarn is wound into a loop and covered by a soft woven protective sleeve,    so there are no sewn ends, no eyes and no metal fittings. It is used in vertical, choker and basket    hitches, and it is the sling of choice where lifting weight, bulk and cut damage are the limiting    factors.

How strong is UHMWPE compared with polyester?

For the same sling size, a UHMWPE sling gives roughly two to three times the strength of a    high-strength polyester sling. That means the same working load limit in a much smaller and lighter    sling, or a far higher working load limit in the size you already use.

How much lighter is it than high-strength polyester?

About one third of the weight for the same working load limit. A 10 t UHMWPE round sling can often be    carried and positioned by one person, which matters on site, at height and on offshore work where    hauling a heavy polyester sling to the lift point is the slowest part of the job.

Are UHMWPE slings cut resistant?

Yes. UHMWPE has much better cut and abrasion resistance than high-strength polyester or nylon, which is    why it is used on steel, plate, castings, scrap and other loads with sharp or abrasive edges. We can add    a protective sleeve or an extra outer cover where edges are very sharp.

Does a UHMWPE round sling float and does it absorb water?

UHMWPE has very low water absorption and a density below 1.0, so the sling does not take on water and    will float. It does not stiffen, swell or rot when wet and it keeps its strength, which makes it suitable    for marine, offshore, dredging and salvage work.

What working load limits and lengths can you supply?

Standard capacities from 1 t to 100 t, and larger capacities, intermediate capacities and any working    length from about 1 m upward are made to order. Tell us the working load limit, the effective length,    the hitch type and the environment and we will confirm the sleeve, the colour code and the weight.

What temperature can a UHMWPE sling work at?

UHMWPE slings are normally rated for about -40 °C to +80 °C. Keep the sling away    from hot surfaces, weld spatter and open flame; where heat is unavoidable use anaramid round sling instead.

Care, inspection and safe use

  • Inspect the sling before every lift: cuts, abrasion, broken or pulled yarns, a damaged or slipping sleeve, chemical damage, heat damage and a missing or illegible label.

  • Check the sleeve before every lift — a cut or worn sleeve exposes the core, so retire the sling or have it re-sleeved.

  • Protect the sling from sharp edges with a sleeve or a corner protector, and never drag a load over the sling.

  • Do not exceed the working load limit, and remember that capacity falls in choker and multi-leg configurations.

  • Store clean and dry, out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources and chemicals.

  • Wash only with clean water and a mild detergent; never machine wash or tumble dry.

  • Retire the sling immediately if the label is missing, if the sleeve or core is cut or badly abraded, or if the sling has been overloaded or shock loaded.

Request a UHMWPE round sling quotation

Tell us the working load limit, the effective length, the hitch type and the environment the sling will    work in, and we will come back with the right sleeve, colour code, weight and a factory direct price.    Custom lengths, printed logos, protective sleeves and test certificates are all part of the service.
